What is there about men
singing in harmony? One of the most pleasing sounds in the universe that
signifies things are going pretty well all round.
The Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau are one such group of men who harmonise with apparent
ease and great passion. Beginning as a 5
voice group singing in the clubs and restaurants of Honolulu the Makaha Sons have been around for more
than 30 years. They sang of their love for their beautiful island home, their
history and their faith, all in close sweet Polynesian harmony. The group was home to two brothers, Israel and Skippy Kamakawiwoʻole , the former of
which is known if not by name then by voice for his gentle and angelic
rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow
that has featured in numerous films and TV dramas over the past 20 years. Both
brothers struggled with obesity throughout their lives and sadly passed away
prematurely.

The group continued and
continues on as a trio making an entirely different sort of surf music.
This record, made before the
passing of the Kamakawiwoʻole brothers is a live set which captures their spirit and sweet sounds
perfectly.
If all you know of Hawaiian music is Don Ho and ‘Tiny Bubbles’, prepare
thyself to be blown away.
